Sam’s Take (8 – 1):
There was a lot to like in the Huskies first game under coach Steve Sarkisian, and now the team seems poised to finally end their 15-game losing streak against Idaho. It is absolutely critical that UW avoids any potential letdown in this game, because the Dawgs must continue to carry positive momentum into the USC game in two weeks.
UW fans have to be happy with the way Jake Locker fits in this new offense so far, and now he has two exciting playmakers at his disposal in RB Chris Polk and WR James Johnson. I expect all three players to pile up big numbers against the Vandals, and there is no reason to expect anything less than a 500+ yard game for the Huskies offense.
Defensively, the play of LB E.J. Savannah continues to stick out in my mind, and he may be the reason that this Huskies D will be better in ’09. He was outstanding against LSU’s Charles Scott (Scott held to 52 yards rushing), and I expect him to continue to flourish as the season progresses.
Some U-Dub players may have forgotten what it feels like to win a football game, but I believe the feeling will come back to them in a big way this Saturday.
Prediction: Washington 45 – Idaho 14
Idaho Player to Keep an Eye On: LB JoJo Dickson - The Vandals D was surprisingly good in a win over New Mexico State, and Dickson was the anchor. He will have a big assignment against Locker and Co. this week.
Washington Player to Keep an Eye On: RB Johri Fogerson - He didn’t get many carries against LSU, but he is a versatile playmaker that could form a potent 1-2 punch with Polk in time. I look for him to get a few more caries this week.
Dave’s Take (8 – 1):
And here it is. Gift-wrapped and delivered express to the Washington Huskies; the first win for the program since November 17th, 2007.
The only way the Huskies lose here would be if they didn’t prepare this week and just went out expecting an easy win, and got caught sleeping. But what in anything that we saw on Saturday would lead you to believe that Coach Sarkisian wouldn’t keep these guys focused and pumped up? And for a team mired in a 15-game losing streak, I doubt any game is being chalked up as an “easy win”.
This game will tell us a lot about the Huskies defense. Yes they looked good against LSU, but when it was all said and done they did give up 31 points. Now they face a team that is definitely weak, but isn’t incapable of getting the passing game going and putting some points on the board.
In the end, it isn’t going to matter. Jake Locker and his offense will score at will on a weak Vandal defense, and if it ends up being a shootout, I like Washington’s weapons a whole lot better. But if the Husky D can step up and have a shutdown day, it would definitely solidify the message that this team had better not be ignored.
