Jerry Glanville’s Vikings bring a “run and shoot” offense to Corvallis that was high on production last season, albeit in the relatively unimposing Big Sky conference. The Beavers secondary should get a solid workout in this game, and that is why it could be worth keeping an eye on. PSU will look to attack the young, developing defensive backs for Oregon State, and it should be interesting to see which Beaver DBs stand out.
Having said that, the rest of the match-ups are grossly in favor of OSU, and the game should be well at hand by halftime.
Look for the Beavers to roll in the opener.
Prediction: Oregon State 47 – Portland State 10
Portland State Player to Keep an Eye On: QB Drew Hubel – A very solid QB that can really air it out, but he should be over-matched by a swarming OSU D.
Oregon State Player to Keep an Eye On: CBs James Dockery and Patrick Henderson – I am curious to see which of the two has a better game, as this well help to figure out the pecking order at the third level after Tim Clark.

It goes without saying that the Oregon State Beavers will win this game. Last year’s Washington State team, which was one of the absolute worst Division I teams in football, beat Portland State 48-9 last year. While this may be an easy tune up game for the Beavers, it doesn’t mean that this is not an important game for them,
Slow starts have plagued the Beavers over the last three years. 2006, 2007, and 2008 all saw the Beavers get out to a 2-3 start and then go on to lose only one more game for the rest of the year, finishing on an 8-1 run in 2006 and a 7-1 run in ’07 and ’08. A 6-9 combined record through the first five games of the season and a 22-3 combined record in the games that followed is an awfully tough stat to ignore.
This season, the Beavers scheduled two extremely winnable games in Portland State and UNLV to try to get started on the right foot. UNLV didn’t mind playing the huge spoiler role @Arizona State last year, and I doubt they’ll be intimidated when they roll into Corvallis next week.
Oregon State needs to work out whatever kinks they have in their system right now, because they can’t afford another slow start if they want to live up to this year’s motto; “09, Our Time”.
