Alabama – Hard fought win over a physical LSU team. |

Texas – The Longhorns laid a beatdown on a very solid Oklahoma State team, and they are now in firm control of their BCS destiny. |

Alabama |

Oregon – Last week I believed USC was the fourth best team in the country, and after watching Oregon hand the Trojans their worst loss of the Carroll-era, I am now convinced the Ducks are worthy of this spot. |

Iowa – Make no mistake about it, this appears to be a flawed team. But 9-0 in the Big Ten still deserves at least some respect, and the Hawkeyes have shown resiliency every step of the way. |

There were plenty of teams rooting for Oregon to beat USC last night, but Boise State had more to root for than anyone. Not only did the loss bounce the Trojans from the national title picture, but it also strengthened Boise State’s resume, as their win over Oregon got even stronger.
Which brings us to a very interesting dilemma; how are we going to deal with the BCS ranking of these two teams? Both schools have very strong arguments, and thanks to the largely imperfect system that is the BCS, no one answer will satisfy everyone.
Let’s just say that Boise State and Oregon both run the table (not too much of a stretch with the way these two teams are playing). After all the smoke has cleared, who should be ahead of who?

We decided not to partake in the optional Week 1 because we aren’t a big fan of preseason polls; with a week of football in the books, we are ready to release our top 25! Comments encouraged!

Team |
| 1 |
Florida |
| 2 |
Texas |
| 3 |
Southern Cal - The Trojans will have a great opportunity to impress pollsters this weekend in Columbus. A win against the Buckeyes may not be enough to overtake Texas at two, but it would be a fantastic statement on the road. |
| 4 |
Alabama - Quality win over a good Virginia Tech team. |
| 5 |
Oklahoma State - The Cowboys had arguably the most impressive win of any team in the nation this past weekend after beating Georgia with SEC-like physicality on both sides of the ball. |
| 6 |
Ohio State - An unimpressive debut on both sides of the ball, but they found a way to win. Now we will find out if OSU can win a marquee non-conference game after so many disappointments over the last few years. |
| 7 |
Penn State |
| 8 |
California - Maryland may not be a national title contender but it is a solid team that the Bears obliterated in all three phases of the game. Cal always seems to lose once the expectations are sky high, but as of now, this is a legitimate top ten team. |
| 9 |
Oklahoma - Good news came for Sooners fans regarding the injury status of Sam Bradford (2-4 weeks is not too bad all things considered), and OU could still find a way into the BCS game with a little luck and a return to form. |
| 10 |
Mississippi |
| 11 |
LSU |
| 12 |
Brigham Young - Say what you want about the way the Cougars won, but they stayed right with the Sooners in the first half (with a healthy Bradford) and most teams are down 28-0 to OU after a quarter. BYU deserves to be inside the important top 12, which is where a non-BCS team must finish in order to be eligible for BCS bowls. |
| 13 |
Virginia Tech |
| 14 |
Boise State - Oregon may have looked atrocious but this Broncos team didn’t exactly light it up ether. In fact, Boise should have blown the Ducks out but sloppy play kept the game closer than it needed to be. BSU has a great chance to go undefeated, but they need to be sharper offensively in order to win over more voters. |
| 15 |
Georgia |
| 16 |
Notre Dame - Impressive first win, even if it was against Nevada. |
| 17 |
TCU |
| 18 |
Georgia Tech |
| 19 |
Utah |
| 20 |
North Carolina |
| 21 |
Oregon State - Efficient win for the Beavers, but they must not overlook a tricky road game at UNLV. |
| 22 |
Nebraska |
| 23 |
Kansas |
| 24 |
Miami (Florida) |
| 25 |
Oregon - The Ducks did lose to a top 15 team and therefore deserve to stay in the rankings, but if the offense has another dreadful day against Purdue everyone’s patience might run out for UO. |
In what wasn’t too much of a surprise to anyone, for the seventh straight year, USC was voted by the media to be the favorite to win the Pac-10 title this season.
Only four voters were brave enough to put a team other than USC in their top spot; three chose Cal and one chose Oregon.
USC’s schedule looks to be pretty brutal this season with both the Cal and the Oregon games coming on the road, and this is the most vulnerable the Trojans have looked in years. But can you really blame the 28 voters that stuck with USC? The talent pool is never ending, and six straight finishes at the top is hard to ignore.
The Media Poll has correctly selected the winner of the Pac-10 for nine years in a row, and is 26 of 48 in doing so all time. Here are the results of the poll; 10 points for 1st, nine points for 2nd, eight points for 3rd, etc.
1. USC (28 first place votes)… 316 points
2. California (3 first place votes)… 277 points
3. Oregon (1 first place vote)… 250 points
4. Oregon State… 216 points
5. Arizona State… 155 points
6. Stanford… 150 points
7. UCLA… 145 points
8. Arizona… 142 points
9. Washington… 74 points
10. Washington State… 35 points
Unfortunately, www.allpac10.com’s invitation to media day apparently got lost in the mail this year. Alas, there is always next year. Just for fun, here is how the two of us would have voted had we filled out a ballot today.
