Oregon Ducks LeGarrette Blount’s post game punch should result in season long suspension

By Dave Consolazio, September 4, 2009 12:46 am

To start the game, both teams met at half field to exchange handshakes, a move that was meant “to encourage sportsmanship in college football”. After LeGarrette Blount’s post game activity, there will be plenty of talk about sportsmanship in college football in the coming days; or lack thereof, anyway.

In the days leading up to the game, Blount’s quote was circulating all over the net; “We owe that team an ass-whuppin’.” I guess when he couldn’t deliver one on the field he decided to deliver one in the form of a sucker-punch after the game.

I hate to bring a goofy movie quote into a serious article, but the entire time I was watching the Oregon game I couldn’t stop thinking about Patches O’Houlihan from the movie Dodgeball telling Peter La Fleur that “that was the worst display of dodgeball I’ve seen in 30 years.” I’ve seen worse displays of football, but not a single one was coming to mind as I was watching this game unfold.

And then, the aftermath. LaGarrette Blount sucker-punches Boise State’s Byron Hout straight to the jaw, and then proceeds to fight with his own teammates (including two blows to the head to WR Garrett Embry) and then eventually need police restraint. In case you didn’t see it…

Pac-10 Players on College Football Awards Preseason Watch Lists

By Dave Consolazio, August 29, 2009 4:23 am

Before every college football season, a series of watch lists are released to let fans know who the award committees will be closely following for each of college football’s awards. With outstanding play, a player not on the preseason watch list can still go on to win the award. The preseason watch list is just a good indication of which players are considered the early favorites to win the award.

Listed below are all of the Pac-10 players who were included on the national lists. The only two awards not listed are the Heisman Trophy and the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. The Heisman Trophy does not release a preseason watch list, and the Unitas Award, which is handed out to the nation’s best senior college quarterback, had no Pac-10 players on their watch list.

Congratulations to the players named, and good luck taking home the hardware!

Pac-10 Position Breakdown: Running Back – Oregon Ducks

By Sam Saig, June 24, 2009 11:27 am

The Oregon Ducks know how to run the football. Only the triple-option offense of Navy kept Oregon from having America’s best rushing attack in 2008. With over 280 yards per game on the ground, Oregon devastated it’s opponents with a potent combination of speed and power.

Chip Kelly’s spread-offense produced two 1,000-yard rushers last season, only the second time in school history that it has happened. Throw in QB Jeremiah Masoli’s 718 yards on the ground, and it isn’t hard to see why the Ducks scored over 40 points a game in 2008.

But one of those 1,000-yard rushers is gone. RB Jeremiah Johnson graduated last season, finishing his fine career at Oregon with 2,336 yards and 30 TD’s. Can we really expect the Ducks to match last year’s productivity with the loss of their leading rusher? It won’t be easy, but a 240-pound bulldozer could pave the way for Oregon in 2009.

Ask Pac-10 defenses about senior RB LeGarrette Blount and you might see a few cringing faces. Better yet, ask Oklahoma State, who wanted no part of the 6-2 240 pound bruiser in last year’s Holiday Bowl.
