Pac-10 Week 9 Notes and Observations: Oregon State Beavers

By Dave Consolazio, November 4, 2009 7:58 am

Oregon State Beavers 5-3 Overall (3-2 Conference)

This Week’s Score: Oregon State 26 – UCLA 19

Next Week’s Opponent: @Cal

This just in; this Jacquizz Rodgers guy is really, really good!

Well, I guess that isn’t “just in”. It’s been pretty clear since day one. But for anyone who needed yet another reminder, ‘Quizz went ahead and put on a show last week. Rodgers racked up 112 yards on 24 carries and 92 yards on seven catches; 204 yards on 31 touches, which is pretty damn good. But that wasn’t all; he also added a 14-yard touchdown pass.

The touchdown pass was the only passing touchdown of the game, but Sean Canfield still had another excellent game, completing 74% of his passes (25/34) for 305 yards. James Rodgers was on the receiving end of 106 of those yards (on 10 catches), and also rushed for 28 yards and a touchdown. Justin Kahut rounded out the scoring with four field goals.

With a 16-0 lead at the half and a 16-3 lead at the end of the third quarter, the Beavers looked to be on their way to a comfortable win, but the wheels fell off defensively in the fourth quarter. After taking the 19-3 lead, UCLA scored two TDs (and converted on both 2-point conversions) to tie the game, but the Beavers avoided overtime with a masterful 7-play 70 yard touchdown drive that took only 01:16 to produce.

While there isn’t too much to complain about in picking up the win, there were a few red flags raised in this one. For one, Oregon State’s inability to finish drives with seven; don’t want to complain too much about scoring drives in any form, but the Beavers had five drives end in field goal attempts (one missed) to only two touchdown drives. Secondly, the defense has been a concern this year, and letting the Bruins get back into the game could have come back to bite them.

If the Beavers can do a better job finishing their drives and putting together a strong defensive effort for all four quarters, they’ll have a great shot at upsetting the Cal Bears next Saturday.

  1. Every time I read from this blog site I learned something new, but the comments here make me think differently at times.

  2. I was wondering if you ever considered changing the layout of your blog? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say. But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having one or two images. Maybe you could space it out better?

  14. This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

  15. Good stuff on here, is there a feed?

  16. “Carmageddon” what “Carmageddon”! Los Angeles became a ghost town with no tailbacks or gridlocks because we heeded the warnings of authorities and decided to stay away or at home. Everyone hadhad said ther would be mass gridlock and tailbacks lasting hours because the 405 highway was closed for bridge demolition. “But it’s not over yet.” The rest of the bridge has yet to be demolished! I wonder if they will ignore “Carmageddon” warnings again in a year from nowand have a real “Carmageddon”? I can’t wait!

  17. This post pretty much covered up all my questions, thx :)

  19. I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

  20. Hi I want to be pleased you for such a nice produced web site. Was thinking this is really a best method to present by myself! Also I feel need to let you know your website RSS doesn’t operate, it keeps showing me a format error from W3C.

When do you think this Real Estate market will go back right side up? Or is it still too early to tell? We are seeing a lot of housing foreclosures in Lake Mary Florida. What about you? I would love to get your feedback on this.

Hey interesting article. Nothing like a good protein shake! With my body, on top of eating healthy protein instead of cheating, Ive figured out that the best solution in getting rid of them is to simply lower my whole percentage of bodyfat to under 9 percent. Ive recently become a follower of a Paleolithic regimen. Its much more natural and how Mother Nature intended for us to eat. Read up on it sometime and drop me an email with what you think. Anyhow, slick site Im subscribed to your RSS feed now so thanks again!

  23. WONDERFUL Post.thanks for share..more wait ..

  24. The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

  25. thank, I thoroughly enjoyed scaning your story. I really appreciate your wonderful knowledge and the time you put into educating the rest of us.
