Pac-10 Week 2 Notes and Observations: USC Trojans

USC Trojans 2-0 Overall (0-0 Conference)
This Week’s Score: USC 18 – Ohio State 15
Next Week’s Opponent: @Washington
USC’s win over Ohio State sent a pretty clear message to the rest of the conference; you are going to have to earn it.
With USC backed up to their own five yard line and the Ohio State Buckeyes crowd as loud as I’ve ever heard them, I got this feeling USC was done for. And I couldn’t help but thinking that Cal fans were licking their chops. If Ohio State’s defense and hostile environment could overwhelm the Trojans, why couldn’t Cal’s?
95 yards later, and all the worries about a true freshman starting quarterback are gone. The chink in USC’s armor was patched up. To have a chance to beat this team, you will need your best effort in all four quarters.
I won’t repeat myself since I already touched on Matt Barkley’s heroics in this article. I was very impressed with Stafon Johnson as he ended up with both of the Trojans touchdowns and his big run at the end of the second half got the field goal drive started.
But the star of that fateful drive was Joe McKnight. McKnight has taken a lot of heat for his propensity to fumbling, but with the game on the line, the ball stayed off the turf and he proved he could be counted on in the clutch. I’d say that drive was almost as important to McKnight as it was to Barkley.
The defense really did a fantastic job all game long. Ohio State had some great field position at points and just couldn’t get anything done with it. It truly is amazing how the starter turnover at ‘SC never cripples this team. Credit linebackers Chris Galippo, Malcolm Smith, and Michael Morgan for doing their part in containing one of the most explosive players in college football in Terrelle Pryor.
Avoiding a letdown is priority number one for the Trojans heading into Washington, but another big priority is getting some spark back on offense. USC looked out of sync for most of the game on offense; tons of credit goes to Ohio State for this. But you can’t always count on a heroic late drive or a mistake-free day to pick up the win, even if you are the Trojans.

And I don’t know if you’ve ever seen her do an interview but she is also rather funny and its all so natural for her. I personally never even heard of her before The V, now I’ll watch anything she’s on.
