Pac-10 Week 1 Notes and Observations: Washington Huskies

By Dave Consolazio and Sam Saig, September 8, 2009 11:48 am

Washington Huskies 0-1 Overall (0-0 Conference)

This Week’s Score: LSU 31 – Washington 23

Next Week’s Opponent: Idaho

Sam’s Take:

I came away extremely impressed by this Washington football team. The winless Dawgs of 2008 looked like a completely different program Saturday, amassing almost 500 yards of offense against one of the premier defenses in the country.

Hats off to Steve Sarkisian and his offensive staff for showcasing some excellent and creative play calling.  Sure Jake Locker made a few mistakes, but he also showed why he is one of the nation’s truly elite talents at the QB position. Along with Locker, Chris Polk, James Johnson, and Devin Aguilar combined for huge plays throughout the game. This is a UW offense that can score on anyone in the conference if it repeats the effort put forth on Saturday.

I also want to salute Nick Holt and his defense for a great effort against an offense full of explosive athletes. LSU has world-class speed on that side of the ball, and the Huskies (who had one of America’s worst defenses in 2008) stayed with them for most of the game. The front seven gave it everything and the defensive backs held down almost everyone but Terrance Toliver.

It took a career day from QB Jordan Jefferson to beat U-Dub, and even still, the Huskies had their chance to win. Now they must carry this momentum and squash Idaho.

Dave’s Take:

What a game for the Washington Huskies. The winless season of 2008 seems like a distant memory now, and it is hard not to be hopeful looking forward.

LSU fans are making a lot of excuses about why the Tigers offense wasn’t more spectacular against the Huskies defense, refusing to give the Huskies defense too much credit. A limited playbook so as not to show too much is the favorite. That’s fine with me; they got the job done when it mattered, and ended up with 31 points.

But how do you explain the defense? That was an SEC defense with very good preseason rankings getting absolutely mauled for 478 total yards. So much for rust on Jake Locker, who had 321 yards and two touchdowns through the air and 51 yards on the ground as well. With Chris Polk’s impressive game (21 carries, 90 yards) this offense looks very real; and the defense is only going to get better as the season moves on.

The Huskies didn’t look like a team deserving of the virtually unanimous 9th-in-the-conference ranking they received on media day. If Locker stays healthy, this team doesn’t look like it will ever be an easy out.
