Pac-10 Week 1 Notes and Observations: Oregon State Beavers

By Dave Consolazio and Sam Saig, September 7, 2009 6:36 pm

Oregon State Beavers 1-0 Overall (0-0 Conference)

This Week’s Score: Oregon State 34 – Portland State 7

Next Week’s Opponent: @UNLV

Sam’s Take:

The Rodgers brothers put on a nice show in Corvallis (‘Quizz with 103 yards rushing 3 TDs, James with 95 yards receiving 1 TD), and the Beavers played with solid efficiency in their opener against Portland State. QB Sean Canfield didn’t have to do much, but he looked very good hitting on 8 of 11 for 158 yards and 1 TD.

The defense allowed some yards through the air but it is to be expected against a team like Portland State, which throws the ball non-stop. Still, the secondary will need to keep improving, as there were some issues in pass coverage that need ironing out.

The game at UNLV will be a step up in competition, so the Beavers must avoid a letdown.

Dave’s Take:

As tune up games go, this one worked fine for the Beavers. Jacquizz Rodgers picked up right where he left off last season, racking up 103 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Beavers offensive attack.

To be honest, I would have liked to have seen the Beavers dominate this game even more. Not sure if it would have had any effect, but the first five games of the season over the last three years have all resulted in 2-3 records, and until this team strings together a great September, they are going to have that “slow start” cloud hanging over them.

I’m sure that mentally this game is already an afterthought and everyone is focused on UNLV; doubt anyone is complaining that “we didn’t beat that team bad enough”. I just hope they are feeling good and got the kinks worked out, because UNLV on the road is exactly the type of game that could catch you sleeping.
