Pac-10 Week 1 Notes and Observations: Arizona State Sun Devils

By Dave Consolazio and Sam Saig, September 7, 2009 3:01 pm

Arizona State Sun Devils 1-0 Overall (0-0 Conference)

This Week’s Score: Arizona State 50 – Idaho State 3

Next Week’s Opponent: BYE

Sam’s Take:

The Sun Devils beat up on lowly Idaho State so it is difficult to gauge how much improvement has been made on both sides of the ball, but it’s hard to ignore the way the Devils defense played, giving up only 37 total yards and getting four interceptions (3 by Mike Nixon who returned one for TD and also had a blocked punt).

Unlike the defense, Dennis Erickson’s offense left a lot to be desired. QB Danny Sullivan was a bit unfortunate, as he had three potential touchdowns dropped by receivers but he also made his share of mistakes (13-25 165 yards). The offensive line continues to be a work in progress and looked inconsistent in the opener. The running game was decent, with five tailbacks combining to rush for almost 200 yards, but I was most impressed with the elusive style of RB Ryan Bass.

ASU is off this week, and the team should get back a ton of players who were missing due to injury or suspension.

Dave’s Take:

Didn’t learn much about Arizona State against such a weak opponent, but it was a pretty pedestrian day for QB Danny Sullivan, who I was expecting to torch this defense.

To his defense, the running game was doing all of the work… but 165 yards through the air with no TDs and a 52% completion percentage are not the numbers I want to see against a cupcake opponent.

QB Brock Osweiler’s 4/5 with a touchdown was a little more like it. Wonder what it will take for Dennis Erickson to open up the QB controversy folder.

On the defensive side, man, what an absolutely lights out performance. An impressive (and improbable) 54-yard field goal by Idaho State’s Jarrett Huk took away what would have been a well deserved shutout from this unit. The talent discrepancy was obviously the main reason for ASU’s dominance, but a day of mistake free well executed defensive effort is worth a hat tip all the same.
